COPE - Community Parent Education

COPE is an eight session, evidence-based program for parents of
children 4 to 12 years old. COPE helps parents to encourage positive
behaviour in their children and improve parent-child relations. Participants
meet weekly for about two hours, plus a follow up meeting to share
successes and ideas. COPE has been found to be effective in reducing
conduct problems, hyperactivity/impulsivity, daily problem behaviours,
parental stress, and lack of perceived parental control.

Step-Family Workshops

A three session program for step-families who want to learn "what works" for building their family, what
pitfalls to avoid, and how to keep it going. Research-based presentations, discussion, sharing ideas and an opportunity
to enjoy being with others walking the same path. For adults and teens.


Preparing New Parents – in eight languages*

A five week program for couples who are expecting a child, or whose youngest child is less than eighteen months of age. This is intended to help couples adjust to their changing roles from partners to parents, and adjust to changes in the couple relationship


Parents of Teens
– in eight languages*

A five-week program geared to parents with children 11-17 years of age. It is focused on helping parents stay connected to their kids during the teenage years. Topics include: the role of parents in the teen's life, changing parenting styles, setting limits and having reasonable expectations.


Parents and Grandparents – in eight languages*

A five week program open to all members of extended families. It recognizes the important role of grandparents in raising their grandchildren. Some of the topics covered are: transferring cultural values from generation to generation,
reading to children in several languages and teaching family customs to children and grandchildren.

*These groups are offered in Chinese, English, Farsi, French, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Tamil as staffing permits.

No referral is needed but registration is required in advance.

All these groups are offered for free. All residents of York Region are eligible.
For some groups, participants may reside in adjacent regions.

This service is funded by the Region of York, Catholic Charities, and the United Way of York Region. We work with many community partners to deliver this service including: the Ontario Early Years Centres, York Region Public Libraries, York Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board, Family Services of
York Region and York Region Children’s Aid Society.
