Group Programs

CCSYR is pleased to offer a wide range of Group Programs to service our local community.  Anyone who lives in the confines of York Region (regardless of religious affiliation) is welcome to register/attend the groups we offer. Fees for all programs are subsidized.Registration in advance is required. Most group programs are led by trained people from various cultures, languages and professions including teachers, physicians, nutritionists and family therapists. Some programs are led by members of the counselling team.  Programs are offered in multiple languages as staffing permits. All these programs are shown on our current season Group Schedule with times, locations and other information.

Preparing New Parents

 

In partnership with a fellow community agency, Life With A Baby; this group is for families who are expecting a child or whose youngest child is less than eighteen months of age. This program is designed to help families adjust to their changing roles and relationships. Topics may include: the importance of parents in healthy child development, best practices for managing stress and anger, conflict resolution, co-operative parenting, age appropriate needs for children's nutrition and safety, and the positive impacts of reading and playing with children.

Parents of Teens

 

Five weekly sessions geared to parents with children 11-17 years of age. This program is focused on helping parents stay connected to their kids during the teenage years. Topics may include: the role of parents in the teen's life, changing parenting styles, setting limits and having reasonable expectations, managing problem behaviour and risky behaviors.

Parents and Grandparents Program

 

A program open to all adult members of extended families. It recognizes the important role of grandparents in raising their grandchildren as well as discussed some of the unique challenges in multi-generational parenting. Some of the topics covered are: transferring cultural values from generation to generation, reading to children and teaching family customs to children and grandchildren.

Focus on Fathers 

 

A 6 session parenting group, just for dads, to help strengthen a father's personal and parenting skills, and enable fathers to become more involved and effective in their children's lives. Topics may include: the importance of fathers in healthy child development, positive behaviour management, best practices for managing stress and anger, conflict resolution, and co-operative parenting, age appropriate needs for children's nutrition and safety, care of the sick child, and the positive impacts of reading and playing with children.

This group is generally run each season, based on program demand.  The Fall 2018 program has just finished and we are in the preliminary stages of planning for 2019.  Details coming soon! Please contact groups@ccsyr.org to register or contact 905.770.7040 Ext. 237.  

Reconnecting Fathers 

 

A specialized 8 session group program for fathers who are unable to live with their children; especially during times of stress and transition, marital separation or court/CAS involvement. The purpose of this program is to help fathers stay engaged with their children, make use of opportunities to visit with their children, be more supportive of their child’s mother, and how to manage their own reactions and choices. Reconnecting Fathers is led by a male facilitator with years of professional group therapy experience. The same range of topics may be covered as in our Focus On Fathers program, but there is more time for the group to deal with feelings about CAS and Court, managing anger and frustration, rebuilding relationships with children, making best use of access times and visits, healthier boundaries with partners/ex-partners, etc.

The Bridge Group For Women

An 8 session supportive group program for women, led by experienced female counsellors, to promote self-esteem, assertiveness, strength in relationships and reduce social isolation. It can be a support for women who are in transition away from individual therapy. Topics include: self-identity, stress management, boundaries and self-empowerment, handling conflict, and self-compassion.

Newcomer Support Groups 

 

These groups are currently offered in Spanish, Korean and Russian. This is an 8 session group for newcomers to meet with other members of their community, share their experiences, build community connection and discuss topics of mutual interest.Topics may include: sharing our stories, the psychological and social impact of moving to Canada, keeping ourselves healthy inside and out, better understanding of Canadian cultural norms, and family relationships.

Separation and Divorce Support Group. 

 

This is a 10-week educational program to help individuals adjust to the end of a relationship with others going through the same process. It is based on the work of Dr. Bruce Fisher, a renowned pioneer in the field of divorce recovery.  His book; Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends, is the foundation for this course. This is an OPEN group so you can feel free to join at any time, even the group has already started.  You can make up missed classes at the next round if needed.

Financial Literacy Groups and Workshops

 

For adults and older teens, on household financial management and on special issues such as retirement, settlement, divorce, budgeting on a low income, smart credit choices, Canadian banking and taxes, and protecting yourself from fraud.
