Settlement and education Partnership in York Region (SEPYR)

SEPYR is part of the Settlement Workers in Schools Program (SWIS) of the federal government.


SEPYR provides settlement services in many languages for newcomer students and their families in their local schools. SEPYR is administered and staffed by Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR) in partnership with the York Region District School Board, the York Catholic District School Board and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.


What Services do we provide?


  • Information and Referral: Our Settlement Workers can assist you in over 30 languages, to gain access to programs and services related to education, housing, employment, health care, community resources, and many others.

  • Cultural interpretation

  • Newcomer Youth Leadership Program

  • Organize Parents/Students Support Groups

  • Experience the Culture series

  • Special Projects, such as:


• Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW); Newcomer Orientation Day (NOD)

• Welcome Information to Newcomers (WIN)

• Newcomer Orientation Workshops

• Welcome to Canada Orientation Day


We can also meet with you or your family, one-on-one, or in groups for:


• Adjustment counseling

• Guidance and support

• Advocacy and access


School Settlement Workers also work closely with school officials and teachers to promote understanding of cultural diversity in the school community. We help to promote student success through community, family and parent engagement in school.




All newcomer students and families in York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board: Permanent Residents, Convention Refugees, Holder of Temporary Resident Permit & Minister Permit, Live-in Caregivers, and others.
